KuneKune Pigs

KuneKune’s are a heritage breed of small lard pig native to New Zealand. Known for their excellent meat, these pigs are a fantastic choice for your table.  KuneKune’s are foraging pigs meaning they graze! This means they won’t root up your pasture and destroy your farm - but be careful! There are lots of imposters out there claiming to be Kune’s and they simply aren’t. If you wind up with a cross, you are likely not going to find the quality or characteristics you’re hoping for in your herd. Kune crosses will often root like any other hog. At Rocky Bottom Mini Farm, all of our breeding stock are AKKPS registered to guarantee you are getting a pure bred KuneKune. We offer gilts, boars and barrows. These adorable KuneKune pigs are easy to manage and simply a fun little breed to have around!

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do I start?

If you’re looking for a place to start, we suggest two gilts, one boar and one barrow. These are herding animals so everyone needs a buddy. You will need separate quarters for your boys and your girls to avoid breeding before they are ready and to avoid friending. A Kune boar will grow too comfortable with his girls if they are kept together, and it is possible he won’t breed her.

What are KuneKune temperaments?

Social and sweet, these little guys make a wonderful addition to any homestead. There is nothing sweeter than going out to your barnyard and seeing these little guys coming running to greet you, and just wait for your first “belly flop” for request for a belly rub!

How do I know a KuneKune is pure?

We highly suggest when beginning your KuneKune herd that you invest into quality purebred pigs from a reputable breeder.  There are many crosses out there and these crosses will not exhibit all of the wonderful attributes of the KuneKune breed. Registered KuneKune's are DNA tested to prove parentage. This DNA is then used to register the piglet with a breed registry.  At Rocky Bottom Mini Farm we use the AKKPS (American KuneKune Pig Society).  This registration can give you the confidence that you are purchasing a true KuneKune pig.
