Chickens

We did chicken math once and now have over 60 chickens and counting!

We absolutely love our chickens here at Rocky Bottom Mini Farm, and not just the chickens, but these roosters are hilarious! Be sure to watch out for videos on our Facebook Page of the antics of Waylon & Willie! Having been a small-town girl, I had never been exposed to the wonderful pleasure of owning chickens. Once my first birds joined the farm I was hooked! Not only do we enjoy having farm fresh eggs, but we also enjoy the hatching process!

Staying true to our name, Rocky Bottom Mini Farm has recently added a breeding flock of Seramas, the world's smallest chicken!  Mini Chickens! Who knew?! Of course when we learned of this adorable little guy, we had to add them to our farm. We will soon be offering hatching eggs and chicks available for purchase and shipping!  How can it get any better than this?  By adding the frizzle gene! Frizzle and Standard Seramas are soon to come!

Not only are we breeding our cute little Seramas, but we will also soon have available Buff Orpingtons and Easter Eggers as well as Frizzle Easter Eggers as laying hens, chicks, roos and even eggs for incubation. Buff Orpingtons are awesome on homesteads as dual purpose chickens used for both layers and meat birds!  Easter Eggers lay a beautiful array of colored eggs! And who can resist the cuteness of any type of frizzle!

Be sure to subscribe to our mailing list and follow our blog to watch as our flock grows and eggs/chicks become available!

Frequently Asked Questions

Why should I own chickens?

Chickens provide a wonderful addition to any farm or backyard!  There are lots of great reasons to own chickens!  The first being fresh eggs!  While it may take some time of growing from a chick to a hen, once your girls start laying eggs, breakfast will suddenly seem even better! Chickens can also help add fertilizer, help control insects, and make wonderful companions and pets.

How many chickens should I own?

We may not be the right person to ask that question! Have you ever heard of chicken math? Somehow we always end up with way more birds than we had planned! But if you really want to decide on how many chickens you should own then the first question to ask yourself is how many eggs do you need?  Each breed of chicken lays varying amounts of eggs in varying sizes. If you choose a strong layer variety then you could expect around 5 eggs a week per hen. If your kiddos love scrambled eggs like ours do then you may need a few extra hens to keep up!

How do I care for my chickens?

Chickens, just like any other animal, have 3 basic needs.  Food, water, and shelter. Their shelter needs to include warmth during the colder seasons. The type of predators that may be in your area is also something to take into consideration. For more information on chicken care and shelter needs be sure to check out our blog post listed above!
