Chicken Math . . . 1+1=1,564,654,327!

I love chickens! And if you know me personally, this will be kind of funny to you because I’m afraid of birds! But chickens, for me at least, are just different!

From laying hens to meat birds, we have it all here at Rocky Bottom Mini Farm! Again, if you’ve read my other blogs on this site, I’m going to sound like a broken record . . . just like every other animal on your farm, chickens need three things! Food, water, and shelter! Chickens love extras from your kitchen but we always provide scratch and feed.

Also, if you’ve read my blogs, you know I love Pinterest! Ever seen the ChickNic tables?! Yep, that’s on my hubby’s farmer-do list! There are so many fun ways to feed and water your chickens. Just give a quick search on Pinterest and you’ll see tons! Lots of DIY ideas with instructions! Shelter can be done in lots of ways as well. The basic components for chickens are a place to free range, a place to sleep and a brooder box to lay their eggs. These shelters can be anything from something you create to something you purchase. We always recommend seeing what you have laying around your farm though to see what you can create that works for you!  As long as you meet those 3 basic needs you are good to go!

Another necessary item for chickens is their dust bath. An old tire works awesome for this (again, Pinterest!). Diatomaceous Earth, Seven Dust, and Pot Ash are great components for a dust bath.  This will help your chickens stay healthy and keep away some of those pesky bugs and mites!

Not finding what you need in your research? Give us a holler and we’ll try and help you come up with a great idea that works for you!

Here at our farm, we have lots of things going on with our chickens!  We have regular ole farm birds but we’re in the process of setting up our breeder bays for Serama, Frizzled Easter Eggers, and d’Uccle’s!  Be sure to follow our Facebook page and our newsletter for future announcements!

Happy Farming Folks!
